BEYOND TASTE

Did you know that you can mindfully enjoy your food with more than just one sense!? Before you dig in to your next meal, pick one thing to start with and see if you can work through this sensory exercise.

Below are some questions and prompts to help you utilise each of your senses.

  • Sight: Look closely at your food. Do you see different colours? Textures? Maybe some different shapes for the individual ingredients?

  • Smell: Close your eyes and take a deep breath in. What does this smell like? Can you pick up on multiple scents? Are any memories coming up with these aromas?

  • Touch: Allow yourself to touch your food! How is the texture and temperature? How does the weight of the utensil feel in your hand?

  • Taste: Bring the food up to your mouth and wait. Can you feel your mouth already tasting and salivating? Now take a bite and chew slowly. Notice the flavour and texture changing.

  • Hearing: Now that you’ve tasted your food, take a second to reset. Close your eyes and sit still. What can you hear? Can you name all the sounds around you?
