With its dark history and ornate architecture, Old Town is home to some of the city’s most fascinating stories.

In the mid 1800’s, Portland’s pioneer merchant-entrepreneurs transformed the city from a stump-strewn clearing to the cultural, financial, trade and transportation hub of the Pacific Northwest — second only to San Francisco as a “metropolis” of the Far West. With this though also came corruption.

If you have ever heard of Portland referred to as The Forbidden City of the West, that is all due the secret network of tunnels and passageways found in Old Town. Known as the Shanghai Tunnels, these passages were used for sex trafficking, drug smuggling, and kidnapping.

Today, most of them are closed off, but there is still a small area left that you can take a tour of - if you dare...
