Welcome to Inman Park
Welcome to the first suburb and electric trolley neighborhood of Atlanta. The idea of Inman Park was conceived by businessman Joel Hurt, who wanted to model the neighborhood after other trolley neighborhoods he had seen throughout the U.S. He began plotting the layout as early as the 1880’s with the help of James Forsyth Johnson and Frederick Law Olmsted.
Victorian-style homes were built over what was a Civil War wasteland. By the early 1900’s Asa Candler, the founder of Coca-Cola, had moved into the neighborhood and built apartments for his employees to utilize the trolley system.

The neighborhood, which was named after Joel Hurt’s business partner - Samuel Inman, was a huge success until the 1960’s when the popularity of the automobile made it possible for easy transportation and suburbs farther away from the city. The people who remained in the area formed the Inman Park Neighborhood Association and fought to preserve the neighborhood.
Due to their efforts, the entire neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1970’s, the Inman Park Neighborhood Association designed and adopted the butterfly logo. They wanted something that represented transformation, but also preservation. If you look closely at the inside of the wings of the butterfly symbol, you can see two faces: one looking to the past, while the other one looking is to the future.
