¡Vamos a jugar!
(Let’s play!)
It wouldn’t be a true Spanish evening without a bit of play! Keeping the traditional music on, grab your pens/pencils and paper - we’re going to play a game.
Whilst the year and place of origin for this popular paper-pencil game is not known, it seems to have been played in Europe by the end of 19th Century. You may recognize it as a simplified version of Scattegories, but today - we’re calling it as the Spanish do - “Basta!” (meaning “Stop!”). To play this traditional children’s game, first make a game board with categories like the below.
To play, select a letter from the alphabet: to do this, one person says the alphabet very quickly and the opponent stops them by saying basta! Whatever letter the person is saying when they hear basta is the letter for that round.
Everyone writes the letter in the space on the left (Letro), and then tries to think of a word for each category that begins with that letter.
Play stops when one of the players says basta para mí, basta para todos (enough for me is enough for everyone!)
Any player can stop the round this way whenever they like. Literally at any time in the round as it can be used as a strategy (for example, your partner is crushing a round and your brain is mush - you can call "Basta para mi, basta para todos!" as an attempt to not let them gain more points.)
To score the round, players read their answers aloud.
The game can last for as many rounds as the players like (we’ve put 8 rounds on the provided template sheet). At the end, players total their scores.
“If you don’t lose, you cannot enjoy the victories. So I have to accept both things.””
¿Y ahora que? (What’s next?)
