Challenge One

Get ready for a spring bake off.

Yes, it’s the perfect time of year to bake butterfly cupcakes!

Follow our simple recipe here and take a family snap of the finished product. They taste even better than they look!

If you want to add a little competition, split up into two teams to create your masterpieces and use food colouring to separate the batches apart!

Whose cupcakes are the fluffiest? Which cupcakes have the perfect amount of jam? Yum.

Challenge Two

Now for a classic game of sock wrestling.

Set up a circle with soft flooring and no breakables nearby. Everyone must sit or kneel in the centre of the space with a pair of old socks on their feet - the aim of the game is to try and remove the socks from all of your competitors!

Anyone who leaves the circle during the game gets disqualified.

The winner is the person who can keep their socks on for the longest!

For a successfully completed challenge, take a picture of the heroic winner celebrating and holding their opponents’ socks!

Remember, play nicely, assign a ref if needed ;)

For the little ones…

… a teddy bear treasure hunt!

We all love a teddy bear picnic, but what happens when you can’t find your teddies?

For this challenge, hide the kids’ teddies and soft toys all over the house. It’s the kids’ job to go on a treasure hunt to find them all!

Once you’ve successfully located the bears, take a fun photo where everyone’s camouflaged amongst the teddies!

Challenge Three

Let’s go on a picnic!

Pack your butterfly cakes along with some other yummy treats and venture out to your favourite reserve, park or beach, it’s time for a family picnic!

We’ve included some fun conversation starters to play while you’re there.

Take a family photo toasting to a great day!

A Sunset Silhouette

A lovely thing about spring is the switch to daylight savings time.

Wait for the golden hour and see if you can snap the perfect family silhouette picture in the golden glow.

For the big kids…

Unleash your creativity and have a go at taking shadow pictures of your own!

Our top tips for taking the perfect silhouette photo:

  • You need to shoot against the source of light! In other words, put the setting sun or orange and pink coloured sky behind your family. This is what will create the shadows.

  • Focus on the outlines, as that’s what your camera will see.

  • If you’re using a phone to take your photos, touch the background so that your camera focuses on the background and you can watch your family become silhouettes.

  • Hide the sun directly behind your subject for a really cool glowing effect!

Post your photo by midnight Monday!

Photography Tips

Want some advice on how to take the best photo?
Give these ideas a try.

  • Unless you are capturing a backdrop or large piece - try getting in close. Fill the frame with your subject to avoid too much wasted space!

  • Be aware of backgrounds - don’t let things like garbage bins or a passerby ruin your shot if you don’t want to intentionally include them in it! Change your angle or wait until people have passed by. It will be worth it!

  • See The Light! Take note of where the light is coming from - does it cast interesting shadows on your subject that you may want to capture or does it just hide the detail you need? Move around to find the best lit angle.

  • Using the flash isn’t just for night time - sometimes a bright day may create harsh shadows that you don’t like, so using the flash may allow a more even exposure.

  • Laugh, don’t smile...a well-timed joke will often lead to a more natural looking shot of your subject rather than a forced ‘cheese’

  • Try framing - is there something you could use to frame your focal point - e.g by shooting through a window or archway?

  • Keep it simple - try not to pack too much into your shot. Try focusing on one or two points of interest per shot.
