East Downtown did not get its fun nickname until 2008 when district management put it to a public vote. EaDo won the vote over the Warehouse District and Saint E, and by 2009, the rebranding began.

EaDo used to be Old Chinatown. In the 1930’s, Cantonese moved from downtown Houston to this area for more affordable living. Immigrants from other East Asian countries also made Old Chinatown their home. This area flourished all the way into the late 1980’s.

Unfortunately, the area was no longer large enough for any kind of growth. Many families sought out the suburbs instead which left this part of the city without much to offer or a plan on how to move forward. Though the city had great plans to revitalize Old Chinatown, ultimately the plans never came to fruition.

Then, in 2008, city officials and developers saw the potential. With rebranding and incentivization, this area began to flourish once again. Now affectionately known as EaDo, this hip, diverse area is back with lots to offer. Without further ado, let your tasting experience commence.
